Surgery usually involves three separate charges: mine, the anaesthetist’s and the hospital’s. Some procedures also need an assistant surgeon, who charges separately.
You receive a written estimate of my fee before your date is booked. The anaesthetist and the hospital provide their own estimates. Your health fund can tell you what it covers. A GP referral is required for a Medicare rebate.
Each hospital collects its own admission details, and you must complete this before your procedure. My rooms cannot do it for you. Have your procedure date, Medicare card, health fund details and a list of your medications to hand.
Register as soon as your date is confirmed. An incomplete registration can delay or cancel your admission on the day. Contact the hospital about its paperwork and fees, and my rooms about anything clinical.
The pre-admission instructions cover fasting, which medicines to stop or continue, what to bring and getting home. Read them as soon as your date is confirmed, as some medication changes start up to a week before.
