Parking
Undercover parking is under the Epworth Freemasons medical centre building on Victoria Parade, with metered parking on Victoria Parade and surrounding streets. A 15-minute free parking area on level 1 of the car park is for collecting day procedure patients. Drop-off is available at the main entrance. Epworth publishes its current car park rates, including a weekly pass worth asking about if you are staying several days after a birth.
Public transport
Tram 109 or 12 to stop 15 on Victoria Parade. Jolimont station is a 15-minute walk.
Access
Step-free entry from Victoria Parade, with lift access to the birth suite, theatres and wards, and accessible toilets on each level. Please tell reception or the birth suite if you need assistance on arrival.
On arrival
Use the main hospital entrance on Victoria Parade at any hour — reception can direct you to the birth suite, or to the day procedure unit if you are admitted for surgery. Your admission letter will confirm where and when to arrive.

What happens at this site

Admissions only Birth suite Gynaecological surgery Special care nursery

Births and gynaecological surgery take place here, with a birth suite staffed around the clock, operating theatres and a special care nursery on site. No consulting is held at this campus. Epworth Freemasons runs across two East Melbourne sites: maternity is here at Victoria Parade, while acute treatment, rehabilitation and consulting clinics are at the Albert Street campus, which the Grey Street Building belongs to.

Your stay
Usually three to four nights, depending on medical need and how you and your baby are recovering.
Your room
A private room, with your partner or support person welcome to stay overnight. Most rooms have a double bed — the exception is the first night after a caesarean, when you will be in a single bed. There is no night nursery — your baby stays with you, with midwives on call.
Dining
A-la-carte meals prepared on site by Epworth’s own kitchen team, ordered from a menu rather than served on a tray round.
Special care nursery
Accredited to admit babies from 32 weeks gestation. Staffed by a neonatal nursing and midwifery team, with your baby admitted under an Epworth consultant paediatrician who reviews them daily, and paediatricians on call after hours. Parents have access to the nursery at any hour. Nursery 03 9418 8308. If your baby needs full neonatal intensive care a transfer is required; see choosing where to have your baby.
Operating theatres
The theatre used for both elective and emergency caesareans is on the birth suite itself, so you are not moved to a separate theatre suite — which is what matters if a caesarean needs to happen quickly. This is particular to Epworth Freemasons; at my other two birth sites the theatre is elsewhere in the hospital. There is no adult intensive care unit at Victoria Parade — Epworth’s ICU is at another campus, and in the rare event you needed that level of care you would be transferred. I am happy to talk through what that would mean for you.
Feeding support
Midwives on the ward, plus lactation consultants at the Maternity Hub for private one-on-one consultations. Your first clinic consultation is complimentary as an Epworth maternity patient.
After you leave
Epworth offers a hotel stay at the Park Hyatt Melbourne as a transition between hospital and home. Ask the Maternity Concierge what it costs and what is included.
Booking the hospital
I book you in after your first visit — you do not need to arrange it yourself. Epworth asks that maternity bookings be made as early in the pregnancy as possible, because availability around your due date is finite.
If you are self-funding
Epworth publishes a self-funded maternity option if you do not hold private health insurance. The hospital’s charges are separate from mine, and both are set out for you in advance.

Visiting you after the birth

Maternity visiting hours
10am – 1pm and 4pm – 7pm. These are tighter than the general visiting hours on purpose, so you get time to rest and feed without an audience. Your partner is not a visitor and is not held to these hours.
General visiting hours
10am – 8pm daily, with a hospital-wide rest period between 1pm and 3pm. Epworth asks that no lilies be brought into any of its hospitals; other flowers are welcome.
Parade Place café
Ground floor of the medical centre. Monday to Friday 7am – 9pm, Saturday 7am – 4pm, Sunday 7am – 2pm.
Pharmacy, pathology & imaging
Slade Pharmacy, Victoria Parade Medical Centre, Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm. Epworth Pathology collection centre Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm. Radiology Victoria, 320 Victoria Parade, 03 9297 8250, Monday to Friday 8:30am – 5pm.
Opening hours for some services vary on public holidays — it is worth checking ahead.

The Epworth Maternity Hub

A purpose-built space in this building — Suite 116 on Level 1 — staffed by midwives, educators, lactation consultants and physiotherapists. It sits alongside the care I provide, not instead of it: use it for the practical preparation and the day-to-day questions between appointments. You are welcome to drop in for brochures, to use the feeding space, or to talk to the team.

Maternity Concierge
One-on-one phone calls and tailored information packs covering everything about having a baby at Epworth. No question is too big or too small — this is the right first call for anything administrative.
Pre-admission consultations
A personal consultation with a midwife about your birth and what to expect. Worth booking if you are anxious, or if your last birth was difficult.
Childbirth education
A full maternity education program, including hypnobirthing. The childbirth educator will help you find the class that suits you, and there is a private antenatal phone call option if classes are not for you.
Breastfeeding support
Private, one-on-one consultations with a lactation consultant. For Epworth maternity patients the first clinic consultation is complimentary.
Gestational diabetes educator
Ongoing treatment and education if you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. For Epworth maternity patients the first clinic appointment is complimentary.
Pelvic health physiotherapy
Specialist physiotherapists for pregnancy and postnatal concerns — through pregnancy, during your recovery on the ward, and once you are home.
